If you are a Christian living in 21st century America you have most likely found yourself in and around a ”food fight” at some point in time. Within the broader culture, debates are raging over the who, what, where, why, and how of our modern diet and its impact on health and lifestyle. But we should not be surprised that food is at the center of controversy when the Bible highlights so many ”food fights” — from the temptation of forbidden food by Satan in the Garden of Eden, to the battle over food sacrifices with Cain and Abel, to the food-driven birthright conflict of Jacob and Esau, all the way to Paul’s response in Romans 14 to a first-century food fight.
Today’s Church is not immune from this debate, as some would use their opinions on food as a cudgel to bludgeon others, even making differences a point of disfellowship when they don’t make food choices to their satisfaction, while others wrongly mock and label ”legalist” those who believe that the sufficiency of Scripture applies to all areas of faith and practice, including stewardship over the body. In this message, Doug Phillips seeks to bring biblical charity and sanity to today’s food fights, rejecting the ”anything goes” mentality of one group, as well as the unwise dogmatism of another. Doug emphasizes that God’s law and the lordship of Jesus Christ must govern our thoughts concerning food, even as we show grace for the maturity, sanctification, and conscience of others who embrace different food practices than our own.
